Sue-CronkiteWhen I chose April's relative of the month it was with great intrepidation. I knew that I would not do her justice because there is so much to say about Sue, and I am confident much of it will be left out. I am sorry for that. Maybe we can have a redo next year

Thankfully, I have a short bio to use that was first printed in the Holmes County Advertiser in 1992. It begins;

"Writer - Sue Cronkite A writer and journalist" . Yes that is her profession but our Sue is much more than all of that. She is a mother, Grandmother,Sister my friend and loving relative. More like an Aunt than a cousin, she's a very special person to all of us who know her and we are so lucky to have her

Sue Riddle Cronkite has published a three-book series called NUTS TO US!, with short fiction depicting life in the Wire grass area; A Farm Boy's Life, Buford Smith's story of growing up in Holmes County during the '20s Depression; assisted in editing and publishing E. W. Carswell's Washington: Florida's 12th County; and the Everett Family History.

At the time of this article, she writes for the Holmes County Advertiser,  conducts writing and publishing seminars at Wallace College in DAY in Dothan,  is a correspondent for Life Magazine, edits Daily, newsletters and is a consultant on press releases, and news materials.

Reared in Holmes County, she attended New Hope School in her home community and graduated from Ponce de Leon High in 1951. She attended Wayne University, Detroit, MI, and the University of Alabama, majoring in communications.

She started in the newspaper business at the Geneva County Reaper in 1955, was owner-operator of the Graceville News and Hartford News-Herald, was editor of the Southern Star, Ozark, and was manager of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. She has been executive editor of Wiregrass TODAY  in Dothan, Community managing editor of the Decatur (AL) news editor of the Rome (GA) News-Tribune, news editor of the Clearwater (FL) Sun and managing editor of the Talladega (AL) Daily.

At the Birmingham News for 13 years, Ms. Cronkite was an editorial page writer, assistant state editor, night city editor, copy editor, layout and makeup editor, feature writer and  reporter. Ms. Cronkite was also staff writer for the Florida Times-Union, and the Seafarer, a port promotion magazine in Jacksonville and worked with the University of Florida Press as production manager
and book editor.

Frequently Sue's name pops up on the web in searches relating to Florida history searches and book publishing. Sue is the "go to girl" when you need to find information about almost anything related to our area. She is a remarkable woman who is still as active as that little energizer bunny. Even know, she is continuing her education  working on her Masters degree.

Sue is one of the most talented people I have ever known, and I am very proud to have her as our featured relative of the month. Although, a month is not long enough for someone like Sue Riddle Cronkite.

Congrats
I'm a little behind on keeping up with the paper, but I am really glad that Sue is the relative of the month. Congrats Sue. I know that Sue and I have only had a chance to meet face to face once that I remember, but I sure enjoyed it and enjoyed the nice cards and notes she has sent over the years. It is an honor to celebrate such a find relative!

Congrats
I think that you should have "saved" Sue for a few years. How will any family member ever measure up to her. Well there is Dan Padgett. What a really nice note from her hephew Michael too. I agree that Sue feels more like an "Aunt".

Years ago I was fortunate to get a copy of "Nuts to You".
It is a treasure, one of a few volumes which I have, where I have known the author.

Keep those stories coming, Sue! No one can tell them like you.

Bpy! Was I surprised.
I have just come back from Geneva, where I went for my uncle Clifton Sullivan's funeral and the wake of my ex-brother-in-law Malcolm Sowell, and turned on the computer and there I was! Wow!
When I sent the Holmes County Advertiser special 100th anniversary section I had put together back in 1992 to Terry, I forgot they made me write stuff about myself.
That was 16 years ago and I haven't done much since then.
The Holmes County Advertiser sold,Life Magazine died,my daughter Mary Lynn and her husband Mark Rodgers bought a motel in Apalachicola and I moved here.
This is a strange little town where the people are about as nutty as they are back home. I'm taking graduate classes in psychology, I had hoped to learn how to understand people, but instead am learning more about how to understand myself.
We have a wonderful family, with amazing history and stories.
It is a priviledge to be associated with all of you. Isn't it wonderful that Terry lets us write about our convoluted existences on an internet newspaper?
Bring on the truths and tales.
Be careful about bragging on me. When the honors started coming in to E. W. (Judge) Carswell, he said "Oops, I must be about to die, they're lauding me with rubber chicken and chinkapin peas."
If I can get the time, I'm sending Terry some of the history books I have helped people publish to advertise on the rp newspaper.

Sue
When I was just a little girl I used to love to hear Aunt Margaret tell all the stories about your advetures. You reminded me of the female version of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. Would love to hear a recap of some of the stories about your adventures at PDL. Remember the time you locked your Chemistry teacher in the closet with his teacher classmate? Love, Anne

Aunt Sue, Mere words cannot describe how I feel about you but, I will try.

The times when I was Sad, Angry at life or just simply out of synchronization you always would come with your very own special way carrying your wit, wisdom and finesse with which you could pull me out of the dark and into the light.

All the way from the angry young man whom you would tolerate and often times indulge, to the now somewhat tempered older man whom you still will tolerate and indulge, your beautiful spirit and countenance are always with me and a part of me and who I am.
I Love You And Miss You Very Much!

I am just trying to figure out if Sue graduated from Ponce de Leon in 951AD or 951BC.

Our Sue
What a great way to start the month. There is no one I enjoy a good visit with more than Sue. Always entertaining and enlightening about our family history. She is our crown jewel in this family and we are so lucky to call her ours. She can spin a tale that will have you in stitches and make you wonder can it really be true.
We love you Sue! Great job Mr. Editor!
Love,
Frances
