For those who aren’t as familiar with the name – Robert Brooks was the only son of Viola Brooks – known to me as Aunt Viola – my Mother’s sister. He was adopted when an infant. Big families are hard to keep track of.
I was shocked to open the paper this morning and read that Robert Brooks had passed away. I had not heard from him since the last email he sent that he had been in the hospital. He never responded again but that was not all that unusual. He would got for long periods and the resurface. Will try to find out what happened.
Robert Daniel Brooks Robert Daniel Brooks Robert Daniel Brooks, 53, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in Tallahassee, Fla. No services are planned, memorialization will be by cremation. All arrangements are under the direction of Marlon Peavy at Peavy Funeral Home in Blountstown, Fla. Survivors include two sons, Sim Brooks and Marshall Brooks, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; Fiancé, Jill Noble of Jacksonville, Fla.
I had a call from Frances Sellers who was Roberts girlfriend for the last eight or so years and she has filled me in on the details of the what happened. Robert has been ill for the last six months and died from cirrhosis of the liver. He had a physical last spring and I remember him telling me that all was good except his gallbladder was suspect. The doctor told him – if you have any pain come in immediately and we will get it out.
He had the gallbladder removed and that is when the trouble really started. Looking back Frances said if they had realized his liver was so bad they would have not done the surgery. He was on the list for a liver transplant but never recovered from the surgery. He was on dialysis and was some better but took a turn for the worse and passed away. So very sad. She had been trying to figure out how to reach his family but had no clue – just knew my first name. She has not been able to reach anyone from the Brooks family in Sopchoppy. I have not idea how to reach them either. The announcement in the paper was premature and she is writing a real obituary for our paper. She had been working to get Robert on disability retirement from FSU but had not finished the paperwork. At least he had good health insurance and I hope some life insurance for his sons.
Sim is getting married and has a good job and is relocating to Richmond Virginia. Marshall is moving to Tallahassee and going to live in Roberts house and attend FSU. He is a music major and very smart.
Robert lived his life his way and had a great time while it lasted. He was working at a good job at FSU and had a house and had made a good life. He was truly the apple of his Mother and Dad’s eye. |
