We went to Texas for the graduation and the swearing in. It was very nice and we had a really good time but it was Hot, hot hot! I felt really sorry for the little fellers that had to stand out in the formation in 97 degree heat. In San Antonio even the breeze blows warm.
They held up really well though and put on a very fine graduation. Bands playing, troops marching! All very patriotic. Of course we were so proud of our son. He was the best looking fellow there no doubt, but the other boys and girls looked fine also. Four of James' friends drove the 750 miles to see him graduate and spend the weekend. I was thinking about if I would have done that for one of my boyhood friends. The answer was a resounding no... Nor do I believe anyone would have done that for me. So I was impressed. James' boyhood friend Jeffery Bennett, and James girlfriend Samantha and her friend made the trip and stayed through Sunday. Gay and I left for Home Saturday morning because we had a lot to do here plus lets face it. If I were James I would rather spend my new freedom with my girlfriend than the old folks anyway. So we gave them a little space.
It was so good to see him, he looked older. He carried himself more erect. He had grown up some. It was a very full filling experience. We saw his bunk, locker, barracks. All neat and orderly, not like the James we had sent away just one short month and a half earlier. What a change a little discipline and fear can make. I think I now believe every man should serve. Well not much else to say, James is on the way to California. He had the highest score in his flight, graduated with Honors, and was made E-3 upon graduation. He is on his way and off to a good start. We wish him continued success and plan to see him Christmas. He should get leave then and be able to come home for leave. Way to go son!
